What We Learned About Dr. KIng

Despite our short(er) week we packed in a lot of learning about Dr. Martin Luther King. We started last week by reading a few of my favorite picture books about MLK. Each author wrote about MLK in a unique way and we learned important information about Martin's childhood and his teachings. One of our favorite books was written by Doreen Rappaport and is called Martin's Big Words. In this book we learned all about Martin's big dreams of peace, equal rights, and love.

A second favorite book of ours was written by Martin's big sister, Christine King and is called My Brother Martin. Christine shared lots of experiences from their childhood and we learned that Martin loved school, liked playing with his friends, and like pulling pranks!

Here are a few of the ways we demonstrated our learning:

Once we read all of our books and had some great class discussions we made a web to demonstrate some of the big ideas we wanted to hold onto.

At the art center we made mini Martin Luther Kings. Then during writing time we talked about Martin's big dreams and then shared some of our own dreams in writing.

We were inspired by Martin's words. I love that this is the first thing you see when you walk into our classroom!

The Tale Of The Gingerbread Twins

I'm so excited to share this blog post with all of you! Over the last few weeks we have been spending time reading various versions of the gingerbread story. The characters we read about ranged from a gingerbread baby to a gingerbread cowboy and the settings spanned a forest in winter, the wild wild west, a busy city and many more.
We were so inspired by these stories that we joined a Gingerbread Family Collaborative with the help of our librarian, Mrs. Groden. We created our own version of the gingerbread story using an IPAD app called Little Bird Tales to share via Skype! Our original plan was to connect with another classroom in Pennsylvania. However since that did not pan out Dr. Quigley came to the rescue! We were able to Skype with him and share our story!

Getting ready for the Skype session...children sat with their partners
 and read over their pages

Connecting with Dr. Quigley! Each pair stood in front of the IPAD
and read aloud their page.

Listening while each pair reads to Dr. Quigley. Our Skype session took
place in the library.

The proud authors!

Now you can see the story we created by clicking on the "Little Bird Tale" below. We hope you enjoy it!!

Happy New Year!

And we're back! Happy New Year! I hope everyone enjoyed their holidays and breaks. I sure did...maybe a little too much hence the "break" in blogging :)
Well here we are with so much to share as we get back into the groove in 2014!
I wanted to start off with a big thank you for the class gift that was given to me by my generous First graders and their families. You are all so thoughtful and I truly appreciate the gesture. A night off from cooking and a yummy Bertucci's dinner is in my very near future!
A couple of reminders too...
If you haven't logged into RAZ kids please take some time to do so. If you haven't visited in awhile (because like me you were on a mental break) go back and encourage your child to rack up some more points in the name of reading! It's too good of a resource to not be used!
Also we are continuing to go through many supplies during our Daily 5 rotations. If you have extra holiday (or other) cards, stationary, envelopes, stickers, stamps...anything to enhance the writing center we would be oh so grateful. Also if you have an extra game of Scrabble and are willing to part with it (or the letter tiles) we'd put them right to use in our working with words center.

Now to the meat and potatoes of our first official week back!

Class Behavior
I am really very lucky to have such a great group of kiddos. But everyone can always benefit from visual and verbal reminders about behavior. Intro our new classroom Clip Chart. It's pretty simple; good choices allows for clipping up and not so good choices will have you clipping down, Children can clip up and down throughout the day depending on behavior. Every day children will start on READY TO LEARN. If they stay there all day-all is good and they've done their job! Most kids will stay here on most days and they should be proud of that!!

Social Thinking
Mrs. Goldstein came in for another visit. This time she talked to us about expected and unexpected behavior. We learned that when you demonstrate expected behavior the people around you feel happy and safe. Expected behavior gives people good thoughts (or green thoughts) about you. Unexpected behavior makes the people around you sad, scared, or uncomfortable. People might not want to be around you. They have bad thoughts ( or red thoughts) about you.

Math
We are continuing to work on strategies for accurate counting, addition, and finding multiple combinations for the same number. Children are becoming more fluent with their ability to count on and manipulate numbers. In one of their math activities children were asked to come up with several ways to make 12. When we recorded all of their answers we realized that we could use what we already know to expand our thinking. If you know that 6+6=12, you can decompose 6 to create another equal equation such as 3+3+6=12. So smart!
Making combinations for several numbers using "Dot Cards"

Finding equal "Dot Card" combinations

Playing a game of "5 in a Row" in which children flip over 3 cards and find the sum of 2
to cover on their game board.

Learning about listening and Gingerbread Glistening

We had a visitor this week! Mrs. Goldstein, our school psychologist, came in to teach us about whole body listening.

She taught us that we do our best learning when we are using our whole body. Ask your child which  parts of their body are on a which are off when they are demonstrating whole body listening. Hint: green is on and red is off.

Writer's Workshop
We are learning more and more of the author's craft! This week we focused on bringing our stories to life by unfreezing our characters. We do this by making our characters move and talk.

We also learned about speech bubbles and quotation marks

Literature Connection
Over the next few weeks we will be reading a variety of Gingerbread stories. As we read them we are comparing story elements including character traits, setting, and endings.

During our art center we made our own gingerbread person by following directions on a glyph. During work on writing time each child chose a gingerbread person ( other than themselves) and wrote what they learned about that person from their gingerbread glyph. It was a great learning experience!

In January we will be collaborating with Mrs. Groden and creating our own gingerbread adventure, which we will then share with another class somewhere in the U.S! It's called The Global Gingerbread Family Collaborative. Stay tuned for more info on this in early 2014!

Raz kids
This a fantastic home/school reading connection. If you have not already registered please use the link below to do so. Your child will be able to visit a personalized virtual book room with books that are at their personal reading level. They will get to listen to, read, record reading, and take comprehension quizzes using books that are at their independent level. Most of the time they will be able to choose freely from the book room, but at times they will have an assignment from me. Be sure to check the "messages" and happy reading!!

Survey Says

DECEMBER!! Can you believe we have been in school for 60+ days? How did that happen?? Well, there's certainly no slowing down this month. We kicked off December in high gear. Here's what we've been up to this week...

Working with Words
This week we are continuing to work with h-pals (ch, sh, th, wh) and also learning about short e and short e spelling patterns.

Building -ed pattern and -ent pattern words with magnet letters

Stamping h-pal words

Playing h-pal lotto

Reading words with h-pals

Writer's Workshop
We did something very special this week! We celebrated our growth as writers by having a "Writer's Museum." Each child chose one piece of writing they were particularly proud of and put it on display.
Then, we walked around reading each other stories. It's one thing when your teacher compliments your story, it's another thing all together though when your peers do!

Math
This week we are learning how to collect data on survey questions, represent data in various ways, and then discuss our findings. We even created our own survey questions to ask our classmates.

Some of the survey questions asked included would you rather be a horse or a tiger....

Are you  6 or  7.....

Would you rather eat cheese pizza or pepperoni pizza?

Sharing!

Our resident astronomer taught us all about planets, space stations
and black holes!

We also learned about Daisy meetings and costume making!

Mystery Readers!
This week was holiday themed....
A silly story by a local author about a retired Santa

And a holiday classic about the first gift of Christmas

Word Play

It was a loooooong week! I think we are all ready for a little Thanksgiving break. Energy levels for my kiddos were high this week, but who could blame them?? We all have turkey, pie, and family on the brain. Even with all that to distract us, room 27 was hard at work as always. Here are some highlights from the week:

Phonics
This week we are learning about h-pals! The H-pals all have names and stories;

Shaun-very studious pal who is trying to get his work done so he keeps telling people sh!
Theo-naughty pal who sticks his tongue out  at people making the th sound
Charlie- loves trains and wants to be a conductor. He goes around saying ch ch ch like a train
Whitney- wants to whistle, but can't so he goes around saying wh wh wh

We used the Document Camera to display magnet letters and build words that start and end with h-pals

We recorded the words we built. We sorted by words that start and end with sh

and th

Working With Words
This is another element of the Daily 5. Each day children have the opportunity to build spelling words with a variety of manipulatives such as....
Wikki sticks
and Magnet letters
We also use Mini Magnadoodles and whiteboards. I'd love to continue to add choices to this center so if you have or come across playdough, glitter pens, smelly markers, gel pens, letter stamps, letter tracers, letter stickers, or anything else children could use to make words or write words we'd appreciate the donation. THANK YOU!!!

Writer's Workshop
This week we learned that sometimes writer's take off their writing hat and put on their reading glasses :)
Writer's reread their own work and do some of the same things they do during reading time such as point to the words, look at the pictures, reread, and go back and fix anything that doesn't make sense. We partnered up and did some editing as readers!

Sharing
During work on writing time, this proud author wrote a wonderful story about
a girl named Ella who was a giant who loved to draw. She used the document
camera to share it with the class.

Our Mystery Reader shared some of her family favorites as well as a silly
Thanksgiving story about a lady who swallowed a pie...uh oh!

A sparkly crystal rock from the Museum of Natural History. The document camera lets us see
all of the detail up close!

We also met Smudge! So cute!
